The service sector accounts for the vast majority of jobs in the U.S. This makes the employment index in the Non-Manufacturing ISM report a must watch. “The Employment Index decreased 0.9 percentage point to 51.6 percent, indicating growth in employment for the 12th consecutive month, but at a slower rate than in July.”

Non-Manufacturing June ISM Lower

The manufacturing ISM surprised to the upside last week but today’s non-manufacturing ISM came in lower than expected for June. The non-manufacturing ISM came in at 53.3, its 19th month of expansion but the concern is the slower rate of growth in the service sector.

On Monday we had the ISM Manufacturing Index report and today we had the latest ISM Non-Manufacturing report. The ISM Non-Manufacturing Report is important for two main reasons. First, while there are a lot of reports on manufacturing activity, there is a lack of reports on service sector activity. The ISM Non-Manufacturing Report provides clarity on service sector activity levels. Second, the U.S. economy has shifted away from a manufacturing economy to a service economy. The service sector provides around 90% of all U.S. jobs. Understanding how the service sector is faring is important in understanding how the economy is faring. This is why the ISM Non-Manufacturing Report was started back in 1997.
